Students in Free Enterprise Host Hunger Awareness Week St. Thomas Newsroom March 1, 2011 The University of St. Thomas’ Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team is hosting a Hunger Awareness Week on campus through Friday, March 4. During the week, SIFE will host events to raise awareness and to show how St. Thomas students can help reduce global hunger.Students can donate a meal at the cafeteria during the noon hour every day. In addition to donating a meal, nonperishable food items can be donated at any of the designated food-drive boxes around campus. All proceeds will go to Hastings Family Service. The SIFE team will match all nonperishable and monetary donations received throughout the week (up to $1,000), and the Hastings Family Service has a matching program throughout March, so donations essentially will be quadrupled.“We’re asking the campus community to help us reach our goal of collecting 1,000 pounds or dollars for hunger awareness,” remarked Madeline Kapler of SIFE. “We encourage everyone to donate what they can to help those in need. A sad, but true fact is that one person dies every 3.6 seconds from hunger; you can help to reduce this statistic.”SIFE is a student organization that focuses on teaching and implementing sustainable business practices, developing projects that benefit the community and world, and competing in an annual international business competition. For more information on SIFE, or to make a monetary contribution to hunger-awareness efforts, e-mail Kylie Gayan.
