See documentary film, 'Wal-Mart: The High Price of Low Price,' here tomorrow
Robert Greenwald's recently released documentary film, "Wal-Mart: The High Price of Low Price," will be shown at St. Thomas tomorrow.
The movie, released nationally by Brave New Films early last month, takes the view that the retail giant is unleashing an "assault on families and American values."
Endorsed and supported by more than 300 labor unions and organizations such as the National Organization for Women and the American Civil Liberties Union, the 98-minute film consists of interviews of present and former Wal-Mart employees and their families, business owners and communities affected by the company; these are contrasted with interviews of H. Lee Scott, Wal-Mart's president and CEO. The film addresses consumer, environmental and social issues: coerced unpaid overtime, foreign sweatshop labor, inadequate health-insurance packages and other conditions at Wal-Mart.
There are two showings scheduled at St. Thomas:
- 11:50 a.m. Friday, Dec. 2, in Room 152, Murray-Herrick Campus Center: A condensed, 20-minute version of the film, followed by a brief discussion and information from Wal-Mart Watch, a national advocacy group.
- 3:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 2, in Room 247, John R. Roach Center for the Liberal Arts: The entire film will be shown, with an opportunity for further discussion afterwards.
