Wellness Center, Window Clings Promote Seatbelt Safety St. Thomas Newsroom April 28, 2011 Practice seatbelt safety and you just may win a prize from the Wellness Center.Stop by the Wellness Center during business hours in the lower level of Koch Commons to pick up a free car window cling. The clings display a message about wearing a seatbelt when driving or riding in a car. The center also will host a table from 11:35 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, April 28, on the upper quad. Staff at the table will hand out free window clings and other goodies from the Wellness Center.The Wellness Center is asking students to place their window clings in the lower left corner of the driver’s side window if possible. Don’t block the view of the road or place it in a spot that could cause a distraction. The Wellness Center staff will check for the window clings on campus. If they see one displayed in your car window, you will receive a free prize from the Wellness Center. Prizes may include a free smoothie from the Pit Stop, a massage gift certificate, a gift card to a local business or another giveaway.The Centers for Disease Control states that more than 2.3 million adult drivers and passengers were treated in emergency rooms in 2009 as the result of being injured in motor vehicle crashes. Adults ages 18 to 24 have the highest crash-related injury rates of all adults. Drivers and passengers wearing a seatbelt can reduce their risk of injury or death greatly. The CDC reports that seat belts reduce serious crash-related injuries and deaths by about 50 percent.For more information email the Wellness Center or stop by the office in the lower level of Koch Commons.
