(Click image for a larger view.)Steve, 89, of Chisholm, died Saturday, June 23. A private funeral service was held Friday, June 29, at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.He graduated in 1941 from Chisholm High School, where he won acclaim as one of the best swimmers in the state. He turned down two college scholarship offers in order to volunteer for the U.S. Army’s 503rd Parachute Infantry Regiment.The 503rd was deployed to the Pacific during World War II. In addition to other actions, Steve participated in the initial parachute assault on Corregidor, a heavily fortified Philippine island where thousands of Japanese soldiers would make their last stand. The 503rd received a Presidential Unit Citation for “extraordinary heroism” during that battle, fought Feb. 16-28, 1945.He was preceded in death by, among others, Michael O’Hara, an adjunct professor in the Opus College of Business.An obituary and guest book can be viewed at Rupp funeral Home.
