The main goal of RecycleMania is to increase student participation and awareness in campus recycling and waste minimization. RecycleMania is a friendly competition and benchmarking tool for college and university recycling programs to promote waste-reduction activities to their campus communities.

Over the eight-week period, campuses compete in different contests to see which institution can collect the largest amount of recyclables per capita, the largest amount of total recyclables, the least amount of trash per capita, or have the highest recycling rate.

"St. Thomas joined the national competition in 2009 and has competed every year since, leading in at least one area every year among regional schools," said Bob Douglas, UST's coordinator of recycling and Central Receiving. "We want St. Thomas to stay on top of the pack!"

Weekly updates of where UST stands in the competition can be viewed at recyclemaniacs.org.
