Reception Planned Tuesday, June 19, for Dr. Corrine Carvalho

Board members of the Luann Dummer Center for Women will host a dessert reception to honor Dr. Corrine Carvalho, outgoing director of the center, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 19. The campus community is invited to attend the reception, which will be held in the women’s center, Room 103, O’Shaughnessy Educational Center.

Dr. Corrine Carvalho

Carvalho, who has served two terms as the director of the center, has been an inspiring and dedicated director. Under her tenure as director, the women's center has hosted, for the March Women's History Month events, lectures by notable women such as Stephanie Coontz, Minnijean Brown Trickey, Susan Faludi, Mary Robinson, Gail Collins and Sheryl WuDunn.

In her capacity as director of the center, Carvalho served on the Affirmative Action Committee, UAWE, the Sexual Violence Prevention Programming Committee, and the Women’s Studies Committee; in addition, Carvalho worked tirelessly to help promote the diversity of women and improve the climate for the GLBT population on campus. She also established a book discussion group, organized the Feminist Friday forums, initiated the annual chocolate reception at the women's center, and supported the Yarn Tamers group meetings.

Carvalho oversaw the publication of the Many Voices newsletter and used social media to increase the visibility of the center. She was honored this spring as the 2012 Professor of the Year.

June 19 coincides with Carvalho's birthday, and there will be a cake to celebrate!
