QMCS Colloquium to examine the basics of wavelets St. Thomas Newsroom November 1, 1999 The next QMCS Colloquium will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 3, in Room 275, Owens Science Hall. Refreshments will be served at 2:50 p.m. Dr. German Pliego of the Quantitative Methods and Computer Science Department will speak on “Wavelets From S-Plus for Density Estimation: A Basic Tool of Applied Statistics.” The talk will introduce the basics of wavelets. Pliego will include a demonstration of the use of S-Plus statistical software. Pliego earned his Ph.D. in statistics from Purdue University, writing a thesis on wavelets in statistics. He has held academic and governmental positions in Mexico and taught at Purdue before joining St. Thomas in October 1998.
