Heid Erdrich, English Department, is the author of an essay, "Cold Urge of the North," and a poem, "Elemental," in the inaugural issue of Borealis, a St. Paul-based magazine of northern literature, art and culture. Also appearing in the magazine's first issue is an essay, "Life at 60 Below," by St. Thomas alumnus and adventurer Will Steger '66, M.A. '70.
Dr. Anne Klement, History Department, served as chair and commentator for a session at a conference sponsored by the American Catholic Historical Association and the University of Portland. In the session, "Applications of Catholic Social Teaching in the Twentieth Century U.S.," Klejment focused on the inconsistencies in thought an dpractice in Catholic social teaching relating to labor as suggested by new research of John A. Ryan's "Industrial Democracy," San Francisco Catholic action, and the Calvary Cemetery Strike of 1949.
Dr. Nick Nissley, Organization Learning and Development Department, and his colleague Dr. Andrea Casey, of George Washington University, will have a refereed article forthcoming later this year in the British Journal of Management. The article, "The Politics of the Exhibition: Viewing Corporate Museums through the Paradigmatic Lens of Organizational Memory," examines corporate museums as a form of organizational memory, considering what a critical management studies lens may tell us about these museums.
Nissley also contributed a chapter to the new book, Measuring Intellectual Capital. He and Dr. Gary Jusela, chief learning officer of Home Depot, are the authors of "Using Arts-Based Learning to Facilitate Knowledge Creation."
James Rogers, Center for Irish Studies, attended the western regional meeting of the Conference on Christianity and Literature March 15-17 at Asuza Pacific University. He presented his paper, "Recent Irish spiritual Autobiographies," in which he examined memoirs of authors Herbert O'Driscoll, Seán Dunne and Dermot Healy. His trip was supported by a grant from the Aquinas Foundation.
Dr. Rawlie Sullivan, Marketing Department, recently returned from the International Applied Business Research Conference in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, where he presented a paper, "The Development of a Transportation Infrastructure in China and Russia." The paper, co-authored with Dr. Yusen Liu of the Marketing Department, was published in the conference proceedings.
Dr. Scott Wright, History Department, gave a paper, "Terrorism and American Culture: The Sept. 24, 2001, Issue of Newsweek," March 14 at the Popular culture/American Culture Association conference in toronto. He also participated in a panel discussion, "The Flag as Icon," Feb. 21 at pARTS Gallery in Minneapolis, and discussed his collection of Scriptural reflections relating to the events of Sept. 11, 2001, God's Counsel, at a Lenten soup supper March 1 at St. Mark's Church.
