Professional Notes St. Thomas Newsroom January 30, 2001 UST student Summer Hanson and her adviser, Dr. William Ojala of the Chemistry Department, are co-authors of a paper, “Molecular and Crystal Structures of N-arylglycopyranosylamines Formed by Reaction Between Sulfanilamide and D-Ribose, D-Arabinose, and D-Mannose.” The paper was accepted for publication by the journal Carbohydrate Research. The paper’s other co-authors are Ojala’s brother Charles, a chemistry instructor at Normandale Community College, and his research student, Joanne Ostman.Dr. David Kelly, Geography Department, recently published a manuscript, “Source Apportionment of Lake Bed Sediments to Watersheds in an Upper Mississippi Basin Using a Chemical Mass Balance Method,” in the journal Catena (Vol. 41, pages 277-292). Its co-authors are Dr. Edward Nater of the Department of Soil, Water and Climate at the University of Minnesota.The Rev. Jan Michael Joncas, Theology Department and Center for Catholic Studies, gave the keynote address at the Sunshine State religious education congress Jan. 21. The congress comprised the seven southernmost Roman Catholic dioceses and archdioceses. His address was titled “Catechesis for Liturgical Renewal in the Church.Dr. Nick Nissley, Organization Learning and Development Department, recently was elected to a three-year term on the board of directors of the St. Paul-based Resources and Counseling for the Arts. RCA enhances the health of the creative communities of the Twin Cities and the Upper Midwest by providing affordable management information, consulting and training services.Dr. Mary Rose O’Reilley, English Department, is the author of one of 45 books nominated for the 13th annual Minnesota Book Awards. O’Reilley’s spiritual memoir,The Barn at the End of the World: The Apprenticeship of a Quaker, Buddhist Shepherd , was published by Milkweed Editions last year.Dr. Henry Smorynski, a former instructor of public administration and political science at several institutions, including St. Thomas from 1970 to 1976, has been appointed provost for academic affairs at the College of St. Benedict and St. John’s University. The appointment begins July 1. Smorynski is currently vice president for academic affairs and professor of political science at Lewis University in Illinois. Dr. Sarah Stevenson, International Education, was chair and presenter of the session, “Athletic and Academic Exchanges With Cuba,” at the Council on International Educational Exchange conference in Montreal, Canada.
