Dr. Heino Beckmann, Opus College of Business (Finance Department) received into the Order of Merit by the president of the Federal Republic of Germany on Oct. 15. He was recognized for his work in furthering transatlantic relations. The Order of Merit is the German government's sole recognition of achievements benefiting Germany and the German people.
Dr. Thomas Carey, Office of International Student Services, was selected by the Australian Government and Australian Education International to participate in the Australian Higher Education Seminar held late September through early October in Australia. Carey was selected because of his many years of service to international education at North Hennepin Community College and St. Thomas. He was asked to present an overview of higher education in the United States to the Australian Department of Education, Science and Training in Canberra and a shorter version for 12 universities across the Northern Territory, Queensland and New South Wales.
Dr. Bill Cavanaugh, College of Arts and Sciences (Theology Department), is the author of Être consommé, Une Critique Chrétienne du Consumérisme, which was published by Éditions de L'Homme Nouveau.
Dr. Camille George, School of Engineering, and Dr. Elise Amel, College of Arts and Sciences (Psychology Department), co-wrote "'Lessons with Lunch' Using a Common Technology with a Global Impact to Address Technology and Data Literacy," published in the proceedings of the 2007 American Society for Engineering Education Annual Conference and Exposition in June in Honolulu. George presented the paper at the conference.
Dr. Shersten Johnson, College of Arts and Sciences (Music Department), has published her article, "'Strange, Strange Hallucination': Dozing and Dreaming in Benjamin Britten's Death in Venice," in the Journal of Music and Meaning, Vol. 5.
Dr. Matthew Kent, College of Arts and Sciences (Philosophy Department), was invited to present a lecture, "Potency and Act in the Human Will," Oct. 13 at the Annual Assembly of Kinlein in Cable, Wis. Because the talk was so well received, Kent has been invited to speak again next year.
Donna Nix, Charles J. Keffer Library, co-presented a workshop, "The Next Generation of Information and Teaching Resources: Are You Ready for the New Frontier?" Oct. 26 at the Minnesota Library Association conference in Mankato.
Dr. Teresa Rothausen-Vange, Opus College of Business (Management Department), is the author of an article, "Making the Impact of Gender on Business Leadership Visible: A Tool for Use in Organizations and Education," published in Leadership Review, Vol. 7. The article also appeared this year in a summarized version as "Exploring Sex and Gender Roles" in Teaching Work and Family: Strategies, Activities, and Syllabi, published by the American Sociological Association.
Dr. Gerald Schlabach, College of Arts and Sciences (Justice and Peace Studies Department), edited Just Policing, Not War: An Alternative Response to World Violence, published by Liturgical Press.
Dr. Christopher Vye, College of Applied Professional Studies (Graduate School of Professional Psychology), was the keynote speaker at the 21st Annual Mental Health Conference of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill Oct. 5 in St. Cloud. The topic of the conference was "Exploring the Anxiety Disorders."
