Two students from Dr. Joseph Fitzharris' Civil War Seminar, Jacob Friefeld and Amanda McNeil, presented papers at the Northern Great Plains History Conference Oct. 4-7 in Sioux Falls, S.D. Friefeld's paper was titled "DeBow's Review and Southern Nationalism," and McNeil's paper was "Beyond Nursing: The Administrative and Organizational Work Done by Women in the U.S. Sanitary Commission During the Civil War." A Dickinson (N.D.) State University student also presented in the "U.S. Civil War Era" session. Brie Swenson, a University of Minnesota-Twin Cities Ph.D. candidate, commented on the papers. The students' work was well received.
Dr. Camille George, School of Engineering, presented a paper co-written by Dr. Elise Amel, Psychology Department, and Karl Mueller, School of Engineering, at the annual conference of the American Society of Engineering Educators June 20 in Chicago. The title of the paper was "A Solar-Powered Decorative Water Fountain Hands-On Build to Expose Engineering Concepts to Non-Majors." George also presented "A Solar-Powered Water Pasteurizer for Sub-Saharan Africa" at the fourth-annual Engineers for a Sustainable World Conference Sept. 29 at the University of Iowa.
Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer, Justice and Peace Studies, received the Unitas Distinguished Alumni Award from Union Theological Seminary Oct. 13 in New York City. The award is given to UTS graduates who have demonstrated "exemplary service" through their vocations. Nelson-Pallmeyer received a master of divinity degree from UTS in 1977. Award recipients are chosen by UTS alumni, faculty, staff and board members.
Sister Katarina Schuth, O.S.F., St. Paul Seminary School of Divinity, conducted a workshop for faculty the the board of trustees of Sacred Heart Major Seminary Sept. 22 in Detroit, Mich. The topic was updating seminary curriculum in light of the new Program of Priestly Formation. Schuth attended the National Catholic Educational Association's Midwest Association of Theological Schools annual meeting Sept. 27-29 in Chicago, where she presented a paper, "Educating Leaders for Ministry." She delivered the annual Dehon Lecture at Sacred Heart School of Theology Oct. 4 in Hales Corners, Wis.; she spoke on the topic of her forthcoming book, "Priestly Ministry in Multiple Parishes."
Dr. Lisa Waldner, Sociology and Criminal Justice Department, co-wrote two articles, "In Search of Understanding the White Power Movement" with Dr. Betty Dobratz of Iowa State University, and "Ideology of Gay Racialist Skinheads and Stigma Management Techniques" with students Heather Martin and Lyndsay Capeder, published in a special issue of the Journal of Political and Military Sociology (Vol. 34, Summer 2006).
Dr. John Wendt, College of Business, recently presented "Medico-Legal Issues in Sports Medicine" at the ninth annual Twin Cities Marathon Sports Medicine Conference. The conference – presented by the University of Minnesota Medical School, Office of Continuing Medical Education and Department of Family Medicine and Community Health, and Minnesota Sports Medicine and the Minnesota Academy of Family Physicians – is recognized as a premier sports medicine conference in the Midwest.
