Will Alexander, Sociology Department, has accepted a position with Hazelden Publishing and Educational Services.
Dr. Angeline Barretta-Herman and Dr. Barbara Shank, School of Social Work, presented "Is Administration Social Work Practice?" at the Congress of the International Association of Schools of Social Work last summer in Montpellier, France. The presentation stimulated debate on the threats and merits of nondiscipline-based academic administrative appointments and explored the benefits of requiring practice licensure for social workers serving as academic and agency administrators. Barretta-Herman presented a re-analysis by region of the World Census 2000. The re-analysis of the data, based on 392 social work programs in 35 countries, focused on program status, international connections and curriculum content. The data revealed remarkable consistency in curriculum across IASSW's five regions, a firm base in the university setting for social work programs and a strong international perspective.
Dr. Mel Gray, Economics Department, recently gave a seminar presentation to students, faculty and staff of the Bolz Center for Arts Administration in the School of Business at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His presentation was titled "The Arts Industry: Markets, Organizations and Contracts." He also has been notified of his election as the next president of the Association for Cultural Economics, International.
Dr. Nick Nissley, Organization Learning and Development Department, is the author of "Human Resource Development and Environmental Management," in a forthcoming UNESCO publication, Development of Resources (Vol. 10), Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems, edited by Mike Marquardt. Dr. Susan Webster, Art History Department, is the author of a new book published in Ecuador, Arquitectura y empresa en el Quito colonial: José Jaime Ortiz, Alarife Mayor (Architecture and Enterprise in Colonial Quito: José Jaime Ortiz, Master Builder). The book and Webster's work were featured in La Prensa de Minnesota, a Twin Cities Spanish-language newspaper, in its Nov. 21-27 issue.
