Preseason national poll ranks UST lacrosse No. 3

The University of St. Thomas lacrosse team holds the No. 3 ranking in the country, according to the first preseason national poll for 2009 recently published by Lacrosse Magazine.

The poll ranked the 109 Division II teams of the Men's Collegiate Lacrosse Association. The top 10 teams are:

  1. Westminster College (Utah)
  2. Grand Valley State (Michigan)
  3. University of St. Thomas
  4. Dayton (Ohio)
  5. Emory (Georgia)
  6. Savannah College (Georgia)
  7. St. John's University (Minnesota)
  8. Elon University (North Carolina)
  9. Southwestern ( Texas)
  10. Western Oregon

Lacrosse is a club sport at St. Thomas. After a strong fall season in 2008, the Tommies are poised to make their fourth straight national tournament appearance in May, noted Sean Thompson, team president.

The team's schedule will feature home games against No. 7 St. John's and No. 2 Grand Valley State. The team will head to Atlanta in February to take on the defending national champion Westminster (No. 1), Emory (No.5), and Savannah College of Art and Design (No. 6).
