Please remember in your prayers Dr. Robert Farlow, professor emeritus of political science, who died yesterday, Feb. 2, in Minneapolis after a long illness.
Farlow, 65, was a member of the Political Science Department faculty from 1985 until he retired in 2007. He was chairman of the department from 1997 to 2006 and was named emeritus professor in 2007.
Farlow, who received his bachelor of arts degree, cum laude, from St. Thomas in 1965, earned his master's and doctoral degrees in international and comparative politics from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio.
His career goal to become an academic had what he called "one major detour" – spending seven years working as a Soviet Union and Eastern Europe analyst at the U.S. State Department. He led St. Thomas to affiliate with the American University's Washington Semester program, which since has drawn hundreds of St. Thomas students to Washington, D.C., for study and internship opportunities.
In a 2004 interview for St. Thomas magazine, Farlow said his St. Thomas career had been "a varied one that challenged me in different ways and different levels. I enjoy the range of teaching opportunities in various programs: political science, international studies and … international management. In the process I've had the chance to interact with a diverse set of students." Ever the teacher, he also recommended a book: Michael Mandelbaum'sThe Ideas That Conquered the World for its "broad view of concepts and developments in international contemporary politics."
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 8, in O'Shaughnessy-Frey Library Center at St. Thomas.
