When Roger Rich stepped onto the College of St. Thomas campus 37 years ago, there was no way to predict that he, more than anyone, would have the best seat in the house for St. Thomas’ remarkable transformation from an undergraduate college for men to the state’s largest private university.

After a third of a million St. Thomas photographs, a dozen cameras, 100 commencement exercises, three new campuses, two presidents and one early ’70s streaker, Rich is retiring June 29 as supervisor of photography.

These 10 pages bring you some of his favorites. While other photographs might have been more technically or artistically superior, he selected those that best "capture the spirit of the person, or a sense of the moment."

As a student at Macalester College, Rich once contemplated a career teaching fine arts and art history. At the end of his St. Thomas career, it is evident that he created art history.
