O’Shaughnessy-Frey Library Center’s Noon in the Library series continues April 27 with an slide-illustrated lecture by Dr. Thomas Dillon Redshaw of the UST English Department.
Redshaw’s lecture is titled”16th-Century Images of 20th-Century Ireland: The Illustration of The Rough Field by John Montague.”
When Irish poet Montague sought illustrations for “The Rough Field,” his long, 1972 poem about the contemporary “Troubles” in Ireland, he found them in John Derricke’s The Image of Ireland (1581), an illustrated book that purported to explain England’s Irish Wars to Elizabethan English readers. Redshaw will examine Montague’s poem and Derricke’s apocalyptic vision of Ireland.
The talk is free and open to all.
