New in the library: Banned Book Week is Sept. 24-Oct. 1

Still today, books are banned for all sorts of reasons in every part of the country. To draw attention to the plight of these many titles, the American Library Association sponsors an annual Banned Book Week.
This year, Banned Book Week will be held from Saturday, Sept. 24, to Saturday, Oct. 1. Watch for an online trivia contest and test your knowledge of banned book minutiae. Check out a banned book just for the fun of it. Try The Catcher in the Rye or any of the Harry Potter books for starters. For some ideas (and for your amazement at what’s been banned) go to the American Library Association Web site.
Wish the UST libraries had a book that is not on its shelves?
Did you know you can request a book purchase for the UST libraries? Simply go to the libraries’ Book Purchase Request Web page and fill out the required information to request the purchase of a title not owned. Any UST community member can use the form. After you submit it, the information is funneled to a liaison librarian for that subject area, who makes the ultimate decision on whether to purchase it. Either way, you will be notified by the acquisitions staff. And if it is purchased, you will be the first person to have the chance to check it out.
