Muslim-Christian Center to host talk next week on 'The Clash of Civilizations? A Viable Alternative'
Dr. Abdullah al-Ahsan, a professor of history in Malaysia, will discuss "The Clash of Civilizations? A Viable Alternative" at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, in the 3M Auditorium of Owens Science Hall on the St. Paul campus of the University of St. Thomas.
The talk, free and open to the public, is sponsored by the Muslim-Christian Dialogue Center, which is part of St. Thomas' College of Arts and Sciences.
Al-Ahsan, who holds a doctorate in history from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and a master's in Islamic studies from McGill University in Montreal, is vice president of the International Movement for a Just World and a professor of history at the International Islamic University Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur.
He teaches courses on Western civilization, European history, colonialism in the Muslim world, and the rise and fall of civilizations. He is the author of Ummah or Nation: Identity Crisis in Contemporary Muslim Society and an undergraduate textbook on Muslim nations in contemporary history.

The center also is co-sponsoring a talk, "Who Speaks for Muslims? What a Billion Muslims Really Think," by Gallup researcher Dahlia Mogahed at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5, in 3M Auditorium of Owens Science Hall on the university's St. Paul campus. That talk also is free and open to the public.
