Meet the authors of What Happy Couples Do

Dr. Carol Bruess of the UST Communication and Journalism Department and Anna Kudak, a Ph.D. candidate in interpersonal and family communication at the University of North Dakota, are co-authors of a new book, What Happy Couples Do: The Loving Little Rituals of Romance (Fairview Press, January 2008, $14.95).

The Communication and Journalism Department will host a pre-release book-signing event from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 20, in O'Shaughnessy Educational Center's lobby. Everyone's welcome.

Bruess and Kudak will be available to talk informally about the book, and copies will be available for sale and signing. The book explores how successful couples create a "culture of two" through shared gestures, language and activities. It also examines the habits and intimacies of real-life couples – some romantic, some silly and some downright strange.

"People in close relationships often speak a language all their own," says Bruess. "To an outsider, those little sayings and silly habits might seem wonderfully romantic or they might seem sickly sweet. But in all cases, these unique, shared rituals are an important part of the glue that holds couples together."

Looking for a last-minute Christmas gift for that special someone in your life? This could be it.
