Kelly McEvers, National Public Radio’s correspondent covering the Syrian civil war, will speak at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 30, in the auditorium of O’Shaughnessy Educational Center on the St. Paul campus of the University of St. Thomas.

The program is the first in Minnesota Public Radio News’ 2013-2014 Broadcast Journalist Series, which is co-sponsored by St. Thomas' College of Arts and Sciences, its Communication and Journalism Department and by Thomson Reuters.
McEvers will be interviewed on stage that evening by Minnesota Public Radio host Tom Crann.
McEvers began her journalism career in 1997, working as a metro reporter at the Chicago Tribune and documenting the lives of female gang members for the paper’s Sunday magazine. She recently ended her years-long Middle East assignment, which included coverage of Iraq, Syria and beyond. McEvers and her NPR colleague Deborah Amos won four major awards in 2012 for coverage of the Syrian conflict. In addition to NPR, her radio work has been heard on PRI/Chicago Public Radio's “This American Life,” NPR's “Hearing Voices” and “On the Media,” American Public Media's “Weekend America,” and the CBC.
Her writing has appeared in The New York Times Magazine, Esquire, Foreign Policy, The New Republic, The New York Review of Books Online, The Washington Monthly and the San Francisco Chronicle. She is a founder of Six Billion, an online magazine that was a regular feature at Harvard University's Nieman Conference on Narrative Journalism.
Students, staff and faculty from the five Associated Colleges of the Twin Cities (including St. Thomas) are admitted for free at the door on the day of program. Just present your college or university ID to the usher at the entrance of the O’Shaughnessy Educational Center auditorium.
