Geology major, Justin Tweet, a sophomore, has been awarded a Goldwater Scholarship. His submitted essay was titled “‘Protoavis’ and the Origin Birds.” The two-year scholarship will cover the cost of tuition, fees, books and room and board up to a maximum of $7,500 per year.
Tweet plans to obtain a Ph.D. and specialize in the field of vertebrate paleontology. Tweet, who has worked at the Science Museum, was identified as an Intel Science Talent Semifinalist in 1999 and a 1999 National Merit Scholar. He also has written a novel and has a Web site on dinosaurs. Dr. Lisa Lamb, Geology Department, is Tweet’s research adviser.
There were 302 Goldwater Scholarships awarded nationally this year from a pool of 1,164 nominations; 10 winners were from Minnesota colleges and universities. St. Thomas received three Goldwater scholarships last year.
