In the midst of a challenging program of study, Full-time UST MBA students understand the value and importance of a solid educational foundation.
Inspired by St. Thomas’ mission to educate students to be morally responsible leaders who think critically, act wisely and work skillfully to advance the common good, the full-time students have created a First Book Full-time UST MBA Advisory Board, which seeks to give back to the community to which St. Thomas belongs.
First Book provides new books to children in need, addressing one of the most important factors affecting literacy – access to books. First Book has distributed more than 70 million free and low-cost books to disadvantaged children and the programs that serve them. During 2010, Full-time UST MBA students raised a total of $7,500 for First Book, including $4,800 in donations from students, faculty and staff and $2,700 in grant money solicited by the board. This money will go to support three YMCA Beacon Centers, which provide activities for low-income families at public schools during non-school hours. Students hold readings at these locations (eight readings were held in 2010), where they distribute books. In addition, the board was able to provide 160 books to People Serving People and 120 books to school libraries in Ghana through Kate Herzog, whose House of Talents was featured in the spring 2010 issue of B.
