Founding chairman, CEO of WellPoint Inc. to speak at luncheon June 19
The National Institute of Health Policy presents the next discussion in the Medical Arms Race Series on June 19.
The featured speaker is Leonard Schaeffer, founding chairman and CEO of WellPoint Inc., the nation's largest publicly traded health care company. He will speak on "The Business, the Challenges and the Value of Health Care: The Role of Purchasers and Plans." A panel of health care and community leaders will continue the discussion following Schaeffer's talk.

This luncheon event will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 19, in the Opus Hall Great Room on the Minneapolis campus. The cost is $60 for members and $70 for nonmembers; lunch is included.

Schaeffer, currently serving as senior adviser to the Texas Pacific Group, spent a professional lifetime in health insurance before taking WellPoint from near bankruptcy to iconic health care status, as it grew in value from $11 million in 1986 to more than $20 billion in 2004. Prior to that accomplishment, Schaeffer was president and CEO of Group Health Inc. of Minnesota (now HealthPartners) and administrator of the federal Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA), known today as CMS.
