EVENT CANCELED: Candidates for governor to debate here next Tuesday St. Thomas Newsroom October 16, 2002 CANCELED: Candidates for governor to debate here next TuesdayTHIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELED.The four major candidates for governor of Minnesota will participate in a debate at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22, in O’Shaughnessy Educational Center auditorium.The one-hour debate is co-sponsored by St. Thomas and WCCO-TV, which will tape the debate for broadcast at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 27.Participants and their party affiliations are state Sen. Roger Moe, DFL; state Rep. Tim Pawlenty, Republican; former U.S. Rep. Tim Penny, Independence; and Ken Pentel, Green.WCCO news anchor Don Shelby will be the debate moderator. Audience members will ask most of the questions during the debate, with questioners selected by WCCO reporters.Thirty seats will be reserved for each candidate on the main level of the auditorium, but otherwise the seating will be open to the public. Tickets are not required.Campaign signs, video cameras, audio recorders and microphones will not be allowed in the auditorium.A portion of Lot G next to O’Shaughnessy Educational Center will be reserved Monday afternoon and Tuesday for WCCO crews, the candidates and the media.Recent polls show Moe, Pawlenty and Penny in a virtual dead heat in their effort to succeed Gov. Jesse Ventura. The election will be on Nov. 5.
