Smith College English Professor Douglas Lane Patey will discuss “Evelyn Waugh’s Brideshead Revisited” in a 7:30 p.m. lecture Thursday, Oct. 14, in the 3M Auditorium of Owens Science Hall at the University of St. Thomas.

The talk, free and open to the public, is the first in a series of four lectures sponsored this year by the Center for Catholic Studies on the theme “Terrors of the Heart.”

The lectures are geared for general audiences; each will focus on a novel that reveals the riches, longings and even the evils of the human heart.

Patey, who holds two master’s degrees and a doctorate from the University of Virginia, is the author of four books, including the acclaimed The Life of Evelyn Waugh: A Critical Biography that was published last year by Blackwells of Oxford. He has lectured at the College of William and Mary and at Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Princeton, California and Yale universities.
