Available for an hour each week? In as little time as that, you can make a big difference to a UST student learning English as a second language.

ELS Language Centers, an intensive program for UST students who are learning English as a second language, seeks volunteers for its Intercambio program. Currently, ELS assists about 60 students from more than 20 different countries.

Intercambio helps international students become more integrated into the St. Thomas community.

Intercambio volunteers attend or assist with ELS group events, such as bowling trips or visits to the Mall of America; meet with students one-on-one for conversation or language tutoring; help students become more familiar with the university by introducing them to other students and professors and giving campus tours.

If your club or organization is looking for a service project, consider organizing and participating in a group activity for your organization’s members and ELS students.

Students enrolled in Business 200 can earn credit in tutor-mentor roles concentrated in either an academic area or an area of their special interest.

Whether you volunteer as an individual, as part of a club service project, or as a Business 200 student, you’ll learn more about another culture and being to understand how a second language is acquired. If you’re preparing to go abroad or need to improve your Spanish, Japanese, Chinese or Korean language skills, Intercambio provides a great opportunity to do that, too.
