Dr. Heather Bouwman to speak Friday on her experiences as an author
UST students, staff and faculty are invited to the 2008-09 English Department Colloquium Series. The second lecturer in the series is Dr. Heather Bouwman, who will present "Becoming a (re)Writer: What I Learned from Writing a Children's Novel."
The presentation will be held from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14, in the O'Shaughnessy Room, Room 108, O'Shaughnessy-Frey Library Center. A question-and-answer period will follow Bouwman's talk. Light refreshments will be served.

When she first drafted her children's novel, Bouwman thought she knew how to write; after all, she had a Ph.D. in English and had taught many first-year writing courses. What she learned in the years that the manuscript languished on publishers' slush piles was that she really didn't know how to read her own work critically, and she was scared of serious slash-and-burn revision.
In this colloquium, Bouwman will read from her novel, The Remarkable & Very True Story of Lucy & Snowcap, and talk about the process of becoming a real writer – someone who understands that most of writing is actually re-writing.
