Club lacrosse team one victory away from return trip to national championship game

Only the Davenport University Panthers of Grand Rapids, Mich., stand between the St. Thomas club lacrosse team and a second national championship. The teams meet this afternoon. The winner advances to the championship game on Saturday.

The Tommies, currently playing in Division II national tournament of the Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association, are on a 24-game winning streak. They opened the 16-team tournament, held May 11-15  in Denver, Colo., with a 22-3 first-round victory over Sam Houston State University, Huntsville, Texas, on May 11.

In the quarterfinals on May 12, the Tommies defeated Grove City College, Grove City, Penn., 16-6. Michael Fitzgerald connected on a big goal for the Tommies; with the team playing two men down, he scored for a 4-0 lead.

The Tommies will play Davenport at 3 p.m. (Central) today, Friday, May 14, in the semifinals. The winner advances to the championship game at 5 p.m. (Central) Saturday, May 15, against either Utah Valley University, Orem, Utah, or Westminster College, Salt Lake City, Utah.

Today's St. Thomas-Davenport game will be streamed online at collegelax.us. Should the Tommies win, Plum's, 480 Snelling Ave. S., will show Saturday's national title game on Fox college Sports at 4:30 p.m.

Fox College Sports will televise Division I semifinal games today, and Division I and II championship games on Saturday.
