The ranking is the highest in the 12 years that St. Thomas has been in that category.

“It always is good to receive recognition in rankings,” said Father Dennis Dease, president. “Our decisions never have been motivated by rankings, however, but simply by our commitment to improve the quality of a St. Thomas education year after year.”

In addition, for the third straight year St. Thomas is listed as an “A Plus School for B Students” (as were eight other Minnesota schools). These schools, the magazine says, are “where non-superstars have a decent shot at being accepted and thriving – where spirit and hard work could make all the difference.”

U.S. News announced the rankings today (Wednesday). They will be published on the magazine’s website and in the 2013 print edition of the “Best Colleges” guidebook, which will be available Sept. 18 on newsstands.

The magazine’s published findings do not explain why St. Thomas moved up in the rankings, which are based on seven measures: undergraduate academic reputation, graduation and retention rates, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources, graduation rate performance and alumni giving.

National Universities are defined as offering a wide range of undergraduate majors as well as master’s and doctoral degrees. Harvard and Princeton are tied for the top spot, and the University of Minnesota is at No. 68. Among Catholic universities in this category, Notre Dame, Georgetown, Boston College, Fordham, Marquette, St. Louis, San Diego, Chicago Loyola and San Francisco rank higher than St. Thomas. Catholic universities ranked lower than St. Thomas are Dayton, Catholic, Duquesne, Seton Hall, DePaul, St. John’s of New York and St. Mary’s of Winona.

All other Minnesota colleges are ranked in three other institutional categories: 251 National Liberal Arts Colleges, which emphasize undergraduate education and award at least half of their degrees in the arts and sciences; 625 Regional Universities, which provide a full range of undergraduate majors and master’s programs but few, if any, doctoral programs; and 370 Regional Colleges, which focus on undergraduate education.

UST in the News for Aug. 30, 2012

In the News

Our Community

Real estate, construction, business and Tommie tote bags are making headlines in August.

“Signs of a sellers’ market emerging,” Downtown Journal, Aug. 13, 2012. “Potential buyers looking to purchase new houses and condos this summer face a market increasingly shifting to favor sellers.”

“University of St. Thomas in Minnesota Selects Bisk Education for New Online Degree Programs,” Minneapolis-St. Paul Business Journal, Aug. 14, 2012. “The University of St. Thomas in Minnesota has selected Bisk Education’s University Alliance division to assist in developing and delivering online degree and certificate programs.”

“LaBreche scripts new chapter for agency,” Star Tribune, Aug. 17, 2012. “A ‘midlife career crisis’ drove a sales-centered digital reinvention at Beth LaBreche’s Minneapolis boutique marketing agency.”

“Tuition and Fees at Private Law Schools Break $40K Mark, on Average,” ABA Journal, Aug. 20, 2012. “Tuition and fees at law schools continue to increase, topping $40,000 on average this year at private law schools, according to an examination of published rates.”

“Lottery remains hot ticket,” Star Tribune, Aug. 22, 2012. “The Minnesota State Lottery has hit the jackpot – again – posting record ticket sales for a fifth consecutive year as recession-weary consumers keep betting on the hope that a big payday is only a play away.”

“Minnesota’s nascent housing recovery spreads unevenly,” Star Tribune, Aug. 21, 2012. “The state’s housing markets are seeing the biggest gains in places where jobs are most plentiful. The Star Tribune Top Workplaces special section was published on Sunday, June 17, and can also be found online. The university ranked 29th out of 30 organizations listed in the “large” category, which included organizations with more than 500 employees.

St. Thomas will celebrate its Top Workplace recognition from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 20. Enjoy cake and ice cream on John P. Monahan Plaza in St. Paul and on the second floor between Schulze Hall and Terrence Murphy Hall in Minneapolis. All employees are invited to stop by for a celebratory treat and social time with colleagues.

St. Thomas was nominated to participate in the Top Workplaces project in March. At that time, 500 randomly-selected employees received emails asking them to complete a short questionnaire about working for the university.

According to the Star Tribune, Top Workplaces recognizes the most progressive companies in Minnesota based on employee opinions about company leadership, communication, career opportunities, workplace environment, managerial skills, pay and benefits. The analysis included responses from nearly 71,200 employees at Minnesota public, private and nonprofit organizations.

“The most important aspect of the Top Workplace designation is that it’s based on employee opinions. We are delighted and grateful that our employees nominated St. Thomas and rated our workplace so highly,” said Sara Gross Methner, general counsel and chief human resources officer. “St. Thomas is a product of the people who work here; it is a great place to work because of our employees’ efforts to live our mission and convictions in all that they do. Receiving public recognition for these efforts is rewarding, and all our employees can take pride in this accomplishment.”

To qualify as a Star Tribune Top Workplace, a company must have a minimum of 50 employees in Minnesota. More than 1,360 companies were invited to participate. Rankings were composite scores calculated purely on the basis of employee responses.

This is not the first time the university has been recognized as a top employer. In August 2010, St. Thomas was ranked ninth in the Minneapolis-St. Paul Business Journal’s “Best Place to Work” survey.

UST in the News

In the News

Our Community

University News

This week’s headlines featuring St. Thomas.

Here’s a roundup of recent St. Thomas mentions the media. If a link has expired, you may be able to find the full-text through UST Libraries’ Summon resource or you may purchase access to the stories directly from the media outlet.
