Catholic observances of Lent
Lent is a penitential time in the Catholic Church. Catholics age 14 and older are bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and on each Friday of Lent. Catholics ages 18-59 also are obliged to fast — that is, eat only one full meal — on Ash Wednesday and on Good Friday. Smaller quantities of food may be taken at two other meals, but no food should be consumed at any other time on those two days.
