Bruce Vento served as a Minnesota congressman for 24 years until his death in 2000. He was a lifelong resident of St. Paul. Prior to his political career he was a junior high science and social studies teacher. He established this scholarship fund to help students pursue careers as science teachers.
Applicants must be enrolled more than half time in upper-level science education courses in a degree-granting program at an accredited university. Preference is given to students who are relying primarily or solely on personal or spousal earnings, savings and/or loans for education and living expenses. Applicants must be permanent residents of the Fourth Congressional District.
Awards are made on the basis of a competitive process that considers financial need, academic achievement, extracurricular activities and work experience, a letter of recommendation and a personal statement of commitment to science teaching.
