Be part of a new tradition: Line up along quad to applaud freshmen St. Thomas Newsroom August 28, 2000 This fall a new tradition will begin as part of the Fall Orientation and Welcome, and your help is needed to make it a success. On Tuesday, Sept. 5, the incoming freshmen will meet their Student Orientation And Registration (SOAR) team leader outside the arches on the south side of the John R. Roach Center for the Liberal Arts (formerly Albertus Magnus Hall) and Aquinas Hall. At 9:40 a.m. a trumpet fanfare will be played and the Admissions staff will lead freshman students through the arches for a symbolic entry into the St. Thomas community. They will then proceed under the arches on their way to Schoenecker Arena for the Deans’ Address in which Marla Friederichs, associate vice president of enrollment services, will hand the freshman class over to Dr. Tom Connery, dean of the undergraduate College; Alan Sickbert, dean of student life; and Nicole Zwieg, All College Council president. Friederichs, Connery, and Sickbert individually will address the freshman class and welcome them to campus at 10 a.m.Faculty, staff and students are invited to come to the lower quad at 9:30 a.m. and line the walkway from the arches to the arena to clap for the freshmen as they process through the quad. This event should mirror the excitement and congratulations given to graduates at Commencement when they walk through the faculty as they process to the football field.Feel free to come as you are, or wear attire promoting UST Pride, your department or office. You also are invited to attend the deans’ address at 10 a.m. in Schoenecker Arena.Thank you for your support and cooperation.
