English professor Dr. Carmela Garritano invites members of the St. Thomas community to join her students in the ENGL 337 African Film: Theory and Practice class for Monday film screenings.
The next showing – two classic shorts by the iconoclastic Senegalese filmmaker Djibril Diop Mambety – will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Monday, March 15, in Room 126, John R. Roach Center for the Liberal Arts.
The films are distributed together as The Tales of Ordinary People. They often are considered two parts of what was intended to be a trilogy. Mambety died before he could complete the third film.
The films are “Le Franc” and “La Petite Vendeuse de Soleil” (“The Little Girl Who Sold the Sun”) (Senegal, 1994, 1999).
The films adopt the point of view of an ordinary Senegalese man and little girl who are trying to manage everyday life after the implementation of structural adjustment programs.
