The Environmental Science Governance Committee has awarded this year’s Pepsi Sustainability Scholarship to environmental science students Tom Langer, Chrissy Miresse, and Ashela Richardson.
This scholarship is given to St. Thomas students who have demonstrated a clear passion for the study and improvement of natural resource utilization, show strong academic motivation and performance, and have evidenced dedication and enthusiasm that positively affect other students.
“These three students embody these criteria and what is best about UST environmental science students: a natural curiosity about environmental problems and a commitment to solving those problems,” remarked Dr. Thomas Hickson, director of the Environmental Science program.
Langer has pursued research with Dr. Kyle Zimmer (Biology) and has demonstrated a natural ability to work in the field and lab on complex scientific issues connected with aquatic ecosystems. He has worked on three research projects; the latest centers on the effects of agricultural runoff on the stable isotope composition of fathead minnows.
Miresse has been involved both in the UST Green Team and Geology Clubs, and she will be working closely Dr. Dalma Martinovic (Biology) on a UST Young Scholars project this summer.
Richardson has been working to create an environmental science club on campus and will be pursuing a project with Dr. Adam Kay (Biology) this summer in the university’s Community Garden. The project will focus on the differences between an organic composted fertilizer and a synthetic fertilizer.
