The UST Libraries’ third annual Food for Fines Drive is under way and will run until the end of the semester. Library patrons can donate canned food in exchange for waived library fines: One can equals $2 in fines. Food will be accepted only for overdue fines, not for lost or damaged items.
Canned food may be brought to O’Shaughnessy-Frey Library Center, Charles J. Keffer Library or Archbishop Ireland Memorial Library. All donations will be given to the Franciscan Brothers of Peace, of St. Paul, Minn. Founded in 1982, the brothers have dedicated their lives to the Gospel of Life, devoting themselves to serve and defend through their emergency food shelf the most vulnerable of society: the unborn child, the severely disabled, survivors of international torture, the poor and the homeless.
In 2009, 156 pounds (168 food items) were donated, helping to alleviate about $336 in fines for patrons. In 2010, 288 pounds (304 items and a can opener) were donated, resulting in $503.25 in patrons’ fines eliminated.
