• American Marketing Association’s Minnesota Chapter offers $1,000 scholarship

    The Minnesota Chapter of the American Marketing Association is offering a $1,000 scholarship for the 2009-10 academic year.

    To qualify, students must be enrolled at the University of St. Thomas (or one of six other schools) and a member of the school’s AMA chapter, or, they must be a child of a current member of the Minnesota Professional Chapter of the AMA. (Membership must be paid through Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009.)

    Application

    The Minnesota Chapter of the AMA will award the scholarship based on the applicant’s answer to a marketing-related question. (See “Essay question” below.) The answer must be an essay in a word document, from two to four pages in length, that is attached to an e-mail and sent to Karly Peters no later than 11:59 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 1.

    Identifying information (name, school, chapter, etc.) should not be included in the text of the essay application. Your e-mail will serve as the cover letter and should include: the title of the essay, the student chapter in which you are a member, and all contact information (name, address, e-mail address, phone number and the name of the school you attend). If your parent is a Minnesota AMA member, provide the name and company for verification purposes. Entries not formatted in the manner described here will be disqualified.

    Essay question

    Personal branding will become more important than a killer résumé or biography. Your personal brand is your public identity. It’s how you are known within and outside your network. Describe your personal brand and define some ways for establishing it, e.g., social media.

    Judging criteria

    • Application of marketing principles – 40 points
    • Creativity of ideas – 40 points
    • Writing style – 10 points
    • Punctuation and grammar – 10 points

    A panel of judges will read each entry. Judges will not know the authors or affiliation of the entries they are judging. Entries will not be returned; all entries become the property of the Minnesota Chapter of the American Marketing Association. Entries are confidential and will be used for the purpose of determining the scholarship winner and in future promotion of the scholarship.

    The $1,000 scholarship winner will be notified by Dec. 1. The winner also will be invited to attend a Minnesota AMA monthly program to be recognized. The student AMA chapter with the most applicants will be eligible for grant money. Audrey Hoefer, a UST student, won the  2008-09 scholarship.
