    Health educator and nutritionist Deanna Latson to speak here Sept. 13

    Deanna Latson, a nutritionist and health educator who has spoken all over the world, will discuss “Eat Right, Feel Good and Look Great” in an upcoming talk at the University of St. Thomas.

    Latson will speak at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 13, in the auditorium of O’Shaughnessy Educational Center on the university’s St. Paul campus. The talk, free and open to the public, is the first of a series this school year sponsored by St. Thomas’ University Lectures Committee. For more information, call Benjamin Nebo, chair of the committee, (651) 962-6136.

    According to Latson:

    • A quarter of U.S. students eat no fruits or vegetables on any given day.
    • Eating disorders are an epidemic on college campuses.
    • Students who consume soft drinks risk becoming fat, weak-boned, cavity-prone and caffeine-addicted.
    • Forty-eight percent of all college students complain of low energy.
    • College students are not making the grade when it comes to good nutrition.
    • Fifty-six percent of college students are overweight.
    • Fifty-nine percent of students say their diet has gone downhill since they went to college. Deanna Latson

    In her talk, Latson will discuss foods you can eat to stay fit; meals that are perfect for test days and finals week; what she describes as “slow poisons” that students eat every day; how to avoid feeling lethargic; and the top 10 foods that sabotage weight-loss efforts.

    Latson, of San Diego, holds a degree in public speaking and has been nominated several years running for speaker-of-the-year by college activities planners. She also holds degrees in nutrition and health communication, and is working toward a naturopathic doctor degree.

    Latson, who has spoken at several hundred colleges and universities, at one time suffered from an eating disorder, excess weight, migraines, colds and low energy. The story of how she restored her health by eating right has been featured in several books, including Perfect Body and Major in Success.
