    Dr. Sarah Armstrong, Personal Counseling, presented a workshop, “Understanding Catholic Culture,” with Dr. Karen Lese-Fowler of the University of San Diego at the annual conference of the Association of Counseling Center Training Agencies in Cape May, N.J. The conference themes were multiculturalism and community development. Armstrong currently serves on the ACCTA board of directors.

    Dr. John Conbere, Organization Learning and Development Department, delivered the pre-conference training on “Strategies for Conflict Resolution in Difficult Situations,” to the Minnesota chapter of the American Physical Therapy Association Nov. 7 in Duluth.

    Dr. Catherine Craft-Fairchild, English Department, chaired a panel, “The Paper Wars of the 1790s: Burkeans, Jacobins, and Those in the Crossfire,” at the annual meeting of the Midwestern American Society of Eighteenth-Century Studies. Among the panelists was Rachel Martin Klinger, a student in the Master of Arts in English program, who presented her paper, “The Eye of Fakland and the Vision of Godwin: Panopticism in Caleb Williams.” Another master’s student, Nicole Brudos Ferrara, discussed the overlap between political theory and economics in her presentation, “The Natural Progression of Burke’s System of Entailed Inheritance.” Rounding out the discussion of conservatives and radicals, Dr. Patricia Howe, History Department, revealed areas of commonality between the two camps in her paper, “Georgian Society, Women and the Revolutionary Debate.”

    Dr. John Holst, School of Education, recently presented a paper, “Globalization and Education Within Two Revolutionary Organizations in the United States of America,” at the Lifelong Citizenship Learning, Participatory Democracy and Social Change: Local and Global Perspectives Conference sponsored by the Transformative Learning Centre at the Ontario Institute of Studies in Education.     Dr. Rick Holton, Master of Business Communication Program, recently gave a presentation, “Target Marketing for Small Business,” for the Professional Editors Network. Holton suggested ways in which small companies can define, segment and reach their target markets.

    Father Jan Michael Joncas, Theology and Catholic Studies departments, is the author of “Music in the General Instruction: An Overview” in The Way We Worship: Pastoral Reflections on the General Instruction of the Roman Missal (Silver Spring, Md.: NPM Publications, 2003, pages 33-39).

    Dr. Sarah Noonan, School of Education, is the author of a recently published book, The Elements of Leadership: What You Should Know (Lanham, Md.: Scarecrow Press Inc.). The book explains the process and elements of leadership in many different settings.

    Several UST staff and graduate students gave presentations at the 2003 Minnesota College Personnel Association Conference Oct. 27-28 at Macalester College. Presenters of a session, “It’s All About Responsibility,” were residence hall director Amanda Suminski; Margaret Cahill, graduate assistant for Campus Life and leadership programs; and Tim Dohmen, graduate assistant for International Student Services. Karen Lange, dean of student life, and Victoria Svoboda, associate dean of student life, presented a session, “Developing Identity for Commuter Students.” Rhea Swinson-Fitzpatrick, Multicultural Student Services, presented “Re-Examining Ourselves and Our World: Multiculturalism vs. Cultural Racism – An Irish Case Study.” Lisa Mueller, Multicultural Student Services, presented sessions with MaryBeth Thompson of the College of St. Benedict; their presentations, “Real World vs. Road Rules,” covered job search and relocation strategies and resources for graduate students and new professionals in higher education and student affairs. Dr. Tom Hodgson, Health and Human Performance Department, conducted a session, “Engaging Diversity Through Leadership Development.” Aarin Distad, program manager for the Graduate School of Professional Psychology; Brian Dusbiber, director of the Life/Word Center; and Jon Ruzek, program manager, Master of Social Work program, presented a session, “Identifying and Reexamining Graduate Student Services.” Virgil Jones, graduate assistant for Commuter Student Services, and Mildred Bynum, St. Paul College, and Javier Guitierrez, Hamline University, presented “Cycle of Fear,” a presentation based on a theory created for the Learning-Centered Practices course in UST’s Master of Arts in Leadership in Student Affairs program. Dr. Jeri Rockett, Dr. Sarah Armstrong, Colette Kuhn and Dr. Steve Maurer, Personal Counseling, presented a session, “Keep the Faith: Counseling and Spirituality.”
