• Dienhart, Rochon to become executive vice presidents under administrative reorganization

    Dr. Mark Dienhart and Dr. Thomas Rochon will become executive vice presidents, effective immediately, under an administrative reorganization that will occur as a result of the recent departure of Dr. Judith Dwyer.

    Dr. Dienhart will be promoted from senior vice president for institutional advancement to executive vice president and chief administrative officer, and will continue to report to me. He will continue to oversee Institutional Advancement, which includes the Development, University Relations and Constituent Relations offices, and also will have responsibility for four other divisions or offices – Finance and Administration; Human Resources; Information Resources and Technology; and Student Affairs – as well as the Rome campus.

    Dr. Rochon will be promoted from vice president for academic affairs to executive vice president and chief academic officer. He will report to me and will continue to oversee all academic areas. In addition, Drs. Rochon and Dienhart will jointly oversee the Enrollment Services area, which previously reported to Dr. Dwyer.

    Dr. Gene Scapanski, who became our first vice president for mission this summer, will report to me; previously, he reported to Dr. Dwyer. Dr. Richard Liu, director of institutional research and planning, and Nancy McGrath, director of diversity initiatives, both will report to Dr. Scapanski. Dr. Liu previously reported to Dr. Dwyer and Ms. McGrath reported both to Dr. Scapanski and Dr. Dwyer.

    I have several reasons for favoring this reorganization, which is made necessary by the announcement last week that Dr. Dwyer would leave her position as executive vice president of St. Thomas to become president of Saint Xavier University of Chicago on Oct. 1.

    Dr. Dwyer and several other administrators had recommended that I try to “flatten” the administrative structure, and one way to do that would be to eliminate Dr. Dwyer’s position. As a result, the Academic Affairs area could report directly to me and other administrative areas could report to another individual.

    This option appealed to me because, in Drs. Dienhart and Rochon, St. Thomas already has two immensely talented individuals in the senior administration. Dr. Dienhart has performed superbly in overseeing our Institutional Advancement efforts since joining the administration in March 2001. Dr. Rochon has made a significant impression as vice president for academic affairs during his nearly six weeks in the position.

    I have every confidence in their abilities to lead our day-to-day operations. I look forward to working closely with them as well as Dr. Scapanski; Bishop Frederick Campbell, rector and vice president of the St. Paul Seminary School of Divinity; and Dr. Nancy Zingale, my executive assistant.

    I am grateful for the suggestions that I have received over the past week about the best way to fill the void left by Dr. Dwyer’s departure. The changes noted here will allow St. Thomas to continue uninterruptedly to address in a clear and forthright manner the important issues facing the university, and I ask for your assistance and cooperation in the months ahead as we carry out this transition.
