• Be a fall orientation leader

Applications are due Friday, April 14, in the Dean of Student Life office, Room 101, Murray-Herrick Campus Center, for positions as fall orientation leaders.

Each year about 1,000 first-year students attend the University of St. Thomas. Orientation helps them make an easier transition from high school to college. At UST, the orientation program has two components: Summer Orientation and Fall Welcome. Summer Orientation is held over three weeks in July; new students spend two days getting to know the campus and learning about St. Thomas. Fall Welcome takes place Labor Day weekend; new students move into their residence halls and a wide variety of activities are planned for them.

Sixteen summer orientation leaders were selected last month. This month, 65 fall orientation leaders will be selected and assigned to a group of 10-15 students with whom they will work over Labor Day Weekend. Fall leaders also are paired with faculty advisers and assist with the Freshman Year Program for four to six sessions in the fall semester.

Here are the responsibilities of fall orientation leaders:

    • Act as positive role model and resource person for new students
    • Facilitate small-group meetings
    • Guide new students through the Fall Welcome program
    • Participate in all Fall Welcome activities
    • Participate in the Freshman Year Program
    • Attend all training sessions
    • Maintain a 2.5 grade-point average and be a student in good standing with the university.

What’s in it for you? Fall orientation leaders have:

    • An opportunity to be part of one of the largest campus activities at St. Thomas. Fall orientation helps set the trend for enthusiasm and involvement throughout the entire academic year.
    • Solid leadership and interpersonal experience
    • Satisfaction in helping new UST students and improving the quality of life within the UST community
    • Cool orientation shirts and other memorabilia.
