BeFriender Ministry will sponsor its semiannual BeFriender Day from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, in the lower level of the Binz Refectory, south campus, University of St. Thomas. The Rev. Joseph Gillespie, O.P., will present “The Magic of Metaphor: Exploring Images in BeFriending.”
The cost of the workhop is $20 if preregistered by Oct. 15; $25 at the door; or $17 per person with 10 or more from the same church or agency (nonrefundable). A midmorning snack is included.

The program will examine how the human imagination is drawn into new ways of understanding God’s grace in life and personal relationships through the exploration of metaphor. Participants will use Scripture, poetry, novels and films as tools and techniques to become "magicians" of metaphor.

Gillespie, Basilica of St. Mary vicar, serves on the faculty of the Institute for Christian life and Ministry and the Diaconate Formation Program.
He was professor of pastoral theology at the Aquinas Institute of Theology in St. Louis until July 1999 and served on the faculties of Eden Theological Seminary and the St. Louis University School of Social Service. He holds graduate degrees in philosophy and theology and a doctorate in marriage and family studies. He is a clinical member and approved supervisor in the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy. Gillespie co-authored the book, Dynamic Assessment in Couple Therapy, and currently is finishing a book titled The Magic of Metaphor.
