• Fall 1999 BeFriender Day is Oct. 23

BeFriender Ministry will sponsor its semiannual BeFriender Day from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, in the lower level of the Binz Refectory, south campus, University of St. Thomas. The Rev. Joseph Gillespie, O.P., will present “The Magic of Metaphor: Exploring Images in BeFriending.”

The cost of the workhop is $20 if preregistered by Oct. 15; $25 at the door; or $17 per person with 10 or more from the same church or agency (nonrefundable). A midmorning snack is included.

All are welcome; call (651) 962-5065 to register.

    Program

The program will examine how the human imagination is drawn into new ways of understanding God’s grace in life and personal relationships through the exploration of metaphor. Participants will use Scripture, poetry, novels and films as tools and techniques to become "magicians" of metaphor.

    You will learn:

    • The power of imagery in personal stories and spiritual journeys
    • The revealing and concealing power of metaphors
    • The creation of a deeper understanding of stories shared for both the BeFriender and the people they visit
    • Practical tools for using metaphors in your visits
    • The effect of metaphors on the assumptive world
    • The exploration of images of God
