Rental Resources and Legal Services for Students

1. Are you having difficulty obtaining services from your landlord? You may pick up a free copy of a pamphlet produced by the office of the Minnesota Attorney General titled, "Landlords and Tenants: Rights and Responsibilities." General information about the attorney’s general office may be found on the Web at www.ag.state.mn.us.

2. The university retains legal counsel with Moore, Costello and Hart and will provide their professional services on the St. Paul campus at no cost to students during on-campus, walk-in meetings. Contact the Commuter Center for details, or click here.

3. As a renter, what is your right to privacy? According to a brochure formerly produced by the St. Paul Tenant’s Union:

“The Privacy Intrusion Act protects a tenant’s right to privacy in a rental unit. A landlord or caretaker can only enter a tenant’s unit:

  • For a reasonable business purpose after giving the tenant reasonable notice (usually 24 hours) o

  • In an emergency situation without proper prior notice.”

For more complete information, contact John Hershey, UST Neighborhood Liaison, or the St.Thomas Commuter Center at 651-962-6138.

4. The St.Thomas Commuter Center produces renter resources brochure, which can be accessed here.
