Music lessons (also referred to as performance studies) are available to all St. Thomas students. Whether you've been studying privately for years or just want to develop basic performance skills, our faculty is happy to work with you! With the exception of beginning piano and vocal classes, all performance studies are individual lessons. First year students are eligible for free 30-minute music lesson through the Freshmen Music Option.
30 or 50-minute one-credit weekly lessons are available in most classical and popular instruments: Harpsichord, Recorder, Piano, Voice, Organ, Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, Saxophone, Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba, Percussion, Jazz/Pop Voice, Jazz Piano, Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass, Guitar, Harp, African Drumming, Electric Guitar, Flamenco Guitar, Lute, Banjo, Mandolin, Harmonica. Private composition and digital music lessons are also available.
Tuition rates for the 2016-17 academic year are $750/semester for 30-minute lessons and $1,513.50/semester for 50-minute lessons.
All St. Thomas freshmen participating in one of the following ensembles: Women's Choir, Chamber Singers, Liturgical Choir, Concert Choir, Symphonic Band, Symphonic Wind Ensemble, String Orchestra, or Guitar Ensemble, are eligible for the freshman option program. This program provides non-music major freshmen the opportunity to take free 30-minute elective level lessons during fall and spring semesters. The freshman option applies to vocal lessons for students participating in the UST choirs. For instrumentalists, the option applies to music lessons on the instrument played in the ensemble. Freshman music majors and minors receive a 50 percent discount on their first year of 50-minute applied lessons. The freshman option provides a savings of over $1,500 per year for both music majors and nonmajors.
