Selected Repertoire for Use in the Lutheran Church -- Missouri Synod Worship and an Orff Schulwerk-Inspired Music Curriculum
Rebecca L. Schaffer
Abstract

The problem of this descriptive study was to select song repertoire for use in the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod worship services and create applications to an Orff Schulwerk-inspired music curriculum for grades one through three.  The research questions included: (1) What are the musical worship needs of LCMS services involving children in grades one through three?; (a) What are criteria for selecting song repertoire appropriate for use in the LCMS?; (b) What teaching recommendations does Concordia Publishing House currently publish for use in their Grades 1 – 3  music education curriculum for the LCMS schools?; (2) What specific repertoire is recommended for serving the needs for Grades 1 – 3 and LCMS worship services?; (3) What are criteria for selecting song repertoire appropriate for meeting curricular goals in an Orff Schulwerk-inspired music curriculum for Grades 1 – 3?; (4) What curricular applications can be made with the LCMS selected repertoire for a Grades 1 – 3 Orff Schulwerk-inspired music curriculum?

Worship liturgy, themes, and three-year lectionary were researched to identify music repertoire goals of the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod worship service.  Curriculum goals of an Orff Schwulerk-inspired curriculum were researched for grades one through three.  Finally, ten pieces of music repertoire were selected that considered both the worship needs of the LCMS as well as the curricular needs in Grades 1 – 3 in an Orff Schulwerk-inspired classroom.
