A Musical Magic Companion: Teaching Musicality Through Cultural History and the Use of Lyrics
Susan Ann Smith
Instrumental music education has long emphasized the use of lesson books that focus on rhythmic and technical development. This project is the collection of brief cultural histories and lyrics that correspond with the folk songs and classical selections found in Rita Jarrard's sixth grade teaching method book entitled, A Musical Magic for Flute, book 2. The aim of the collection is to aid in the development of musicality along with rhythmic and technical skills in sixth grade flute students. Students may gain heightened interpretation abilities as they see and feel how breath marks coincide with phrase endings and how the melodic contour matches lyrical meaning and texture. They will perhaps also experience glimpses of varying cultures and be influenced to compose their own music as they learn how other composers were inspired to create. Moreover, the exploration of other cultures may enhance the growth of each student's intra- and interpersonal intelligence while additionally meeting some of the expectations put forth by National Standards Number 8 and 9.
