Developing Repertoire Selection Criteria and a Repertoire List for Seventh-Grade Mixed Choirs
Rhonda J. Schwartz
The purpose of this study was to create selection criteria to determine if a piece of choral music should be considered quality choral music to use in a seventh-grade mixed choir setting, and to produce a repertoire list of quality songs that fit the selection criteria. The creation of criteria included a study of books and articles written by music educators on the selection of repertoire for choirs. The criteria were then used in the selection of music for a repertoire list. Music titles for the list were selected from personal files, annotated repertoire lists, journal articles, state repertoire listings, and teacher surveys. Each title was read, played and analyzed to match it to the set criteria before it was added to the repertoire list.
