Orff-Schulwerk in the Church: A Brief Hisory and a Collection of Anthems Arranged by the Author
Melinda Ramseth Hoiland
Abstract
The Orff-Schulwerk approach to teaching music is widely use din school settings around the country. It has also become an integral component of many church music programs. The purpose of this project is to give a brief history of Orff-Schulwerk as it traveled from Europe to North America and eventually from school settings to the church. The author's mother, Betty Ann (Donhowe) Ramseth, is highlighted as a pioneer in bringing Orff into the church. In addition, applications toward creating a church Orff program are discussed, and selected works arranged for Orff instruments by the author are listed with descriptions and suggestions for use throughout the church year. Historical accounts found in textbooks and magazine article as well as individual interviews were used in the research.
