The Nature of Contest Organization Procedures for Minnesota Class AA Band Contests
Abstract

The purpose of this project was to document and examine the organizational details of the eight AA Regions of the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) band contests.  The analysis includes how each Region determines its host schools, contest dates, entry fees, contest expenses paid, and numbers of judges used at each contest with particular attention to large group contest and any separately held jazz band contest that a Region may sponsor.

Elements of this study included: a brief history of the administrative organizations of the National Band Contest movement in the United States; a brief history of the administrative organizations of the Minnesota band contests; statements of the current rules, regulations, and bylaws of the Minnesota State High School League relevant to this study; relevant results of surveys and interview transcripts from contest managers and participants from each of the eight AA Regions with data drawn on the 2011 – 2012 contest season; chapter summaries of those rules, regulations, and bylaws of the MSHSL and those procedural comparisons of current practice; conclusions drawn from those summaries, and recommendations for further study and the improvement of Minnesota State High School League band contests.
