Develping Musicianship Through Folk Dance: The Analysis and Teaching Process
Kristen J. Roemer
Abstract

Folk dance in the elementary music classroom is commonly utilized for its emphasis on community building, problem solving and strengthening elemental musical concepts. However, folk dance is often overlooked for its potential to enhance musical skills and concepts beyond simple form and meter. Therefore, this project examines several methodologies of teaching and learning folk dance within the elementary music classroom in terms of analysis, sequential process and facilitation of cultural understanding. Practical classroom application is provided in the form of three lesson plans for the upper elementary classroom where the goal is developing musicianship.
