The intent of this paper is to synthesize current methods of part-singing development in order to create a new sequential process for developing part-singing specifically designed for beginning mixed-voice middle school choirs. In order to develop a new method, current part-singing methods are compared and evaluated, and special considerations for beginning middle school singers are addressed. A repertoire list of quality examples for seventh and eighth grade mixed choir accompanies this new method, as well as a chart displaying the variety within these examples. The purpose of this study is to provide directors of beginning middle school choirs with a systematic approach to part-singing that fosters independent and effective student musicians who are ready for a traditional high school choral ensemble experience.
